Artist in attendance.

Graham Gillmore, known for his paintings of bold statements and confrontational observances, presents a new body of paintings on masonite. As Gillmore states, “This work employs a multi-voiced narrative that perfectly captures the rifts and rhythms of latter-day planet earth”.

This new body of work has a darker quality as Gillmore continues to investigate the nature of human relationships. A re-occurring theme throughout the text explored in this body of work has a disturbing quality, words that address and name the idea of separation and disconnection between human beings. There is a black humour that permeates this body of work as Gillmore studies the interchange between authentic despair and bitter or sarcastic cynicism. Works such as, “Use less” or “Crazy (Fucking) World”, attempt to reconcile the separation, yet are haunted by a threatening tone.

Though consistent in approach and boldness of style for years, Gillmore continues to experiment and challenge himself as a painter in the technique and methods used that have become synonymous with his name. This new body of work includes experimentations with wet on wet, as well as an endeavor to empty his work of unnecessary text or movement, resulting in a reductive quality. No matter the technique, Gillmore never ceases to honestly and unabashedly attempt to express the true nature of the human condition.

Graham Gillmore lives and works in New York City and Winlaw, British Columbia.
