The Monte Clark Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of works by the late Garry Winogrand.

GARRY WINOGRAND
From the portfolio “Women are better than men. Not only have they survived, they do prevail.”
Works from 1978-80.

Until February 6, 2005

“Most photographs are of life,” said Winogrand, “what goes on in the world. And that’s boring, generally. Life is banal, you know….Well, that’s what’s interesting. There is a transformation, you see, when you just put four edges around it. That changes it. A new world is created….I photograph to find out what something will look like photographed.”

Garry Winogrand is perhaps most recognized for his candid, honest and sometimes confrontational images of American life. Inspired by Walker Evan’s book American Photographs and Robert Frank’s The Americans, both published in 1955, Winogrand sought to create his own visual documentation and commentary on contemporary life. Winogrand’s images capture the intimacy of lives lived and contacts made in America’s urban history.

Born in 1928, Garry Winogrand worked as a free-lance photojournalist for such magazines as Sports Illustrated, Life, Colliers and Harpar’s Bazaar. His approach to photography as social documentary saw him capturing American life at sporting events, in zoos and airports, on the street and at political demonstrations. During the 30 years that he photographed, Winogrand took thousands of images, produced five books and exhibited and lectured throughout the United States and abroad. He is considered to be one of America’s greatest photographers of the twentieth century.

The series “Women are better than men. Not only have they survived, they do prevail” presents fifteen works taken between 1978 and 1980. This collection of works is believed to be one of the final series that Winogrand created prior to his death in 1984.
