GARDENS
Scott McFarland
September 9 – October 9, 2004

Opening reception: Thursday, September 9, 2004 at 6:00pm. Artist in attendance.

Scott McFarland’s detailed and digitally mastered photographs of Vancouver’s veiled gardens invite the viewer to step into more than a private paradise. They call the viewer to participate in, and question, a world unknown and unseen. More than decorative environments, the gardens studied are spaces to inhabit, requesting attention and consideration.

McFarland’s work flawlessly examines the role the gardens play for the owners and that of those that tend to these beautiful and complex environments. One series of four works taken at the same property depicts the micro-maintenance and management required to upkeep this pristine ideal.

Through these observations, McFarland creates a visual metaphor comparing the imperceptible balance of this micro-cosmic management to the precise environmental control required in the photographic process. Two large-scale panoramas testify to the devolution of the gardens as human control is relinquished. Though seemingly neglected and untouched, these gardens still speak of the altered landscape. Scott McFarland’s highly manipulated and manufactured photographs invite temporal consideration.

This show features eleven new works, some never before seen in Canada, including those recently showcased in the “Everything Gone Green” exhibition at the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television in Bradford, England.

Scott McFarland has participated in numerous group shows and has had solo exhibitions at the Contemporary Art Gallery in Vancouver, and Union Projects in London, England. His work has been included in the collection of The National Gallery of Canada. Scott McFarland lives and works in Vancouver, BC.
