Opening reception: Saturday June 26, 2004

The Monte Clark Gallery is pleased to present the new body of work from Toronto based artist Tony Scherman entitled "Ciao Gaia". Scherman's encaustic method of painting combines pigment and wax to create works with multiple layers and a remarkable sense of depth. The dripping and heavily built up wax surface gives the work a visceral edge. In this exhibition, Scherman includes paintings of landscapes and birds juxtaposed with an eight by six foot image of an atomic explosion. The powerful images of nature are dramatically contrasted by this icon of Man's destructive potential. In certain landscapes, Scherman bites into the surface with blow torch and knife reworking the image sometimes exposing the raw canvas underneath. The result leaves the viewer to contemplate the enduring beauty of nature and the ultimate hand of man.
