MARK LEWIS
May 6 - June 24, 2004
Opening reception: Thursday May 6, 2004
Artist in attendance
The film works of Mark Lewis introduce us to the element of time used as the fourth dimension of artistic expression. The cinematic beauty of this work evolves from subtle shifts in perspective and hypnotic panning shots to immerse the viewer within his art. The films are 'designed to touch on and reflect upon the ambivalent relationship between movement and stillness, duration and instant, that has always haunted the cinema'. Using the cinematic richness of a 35mm motion picture camera, the works are generally composed of one continuous moving shot bereft of edits. The carefully timed 'Algonquin Park, Early March' reveals a monochromatic and abstract development of the picturesque in, as Lewis phrases, 'the imaginary origin of Canadian Art History'. The action is placed within the camera and fully reveals to the viewer the more painterly aspects of his film work. While in 'Churchyard Row' the viewer is taken on a 360 degree journey through a London suburb resulting in a questioning of urban space and expectation. Location photographs from the films augment the body of work.
Mark Lewis is the Principal Lecturer in Research at Central St. Martins School of Art and Design, London and is co-editor of 'Afterall', an international art journal published in London and Los Angeles. He lives and works in London, England.
