In this exhibition, Brad Phillips presents a series of watercolours and oils that lay bare the thinly veiled tension and violence of suburban youth. In the cul-de-sacs where one would expect to find leisure and tranquility, nuclear families and backyard barbeques, Phillips and his friends were privy to something much darker. Bush parties, morbid fascinations, and drainage tunnel hideouts formed the backdrop for youth wanting and striving for more than their suburban upbringing allotted them. 'These people I knew were in similar situations to me but their lives took much darker turns - murdered, killed by trains, in jail, twin brothers Jake and Robert who would have dart fights on PCP. I have a real sympathy for these people.' According to Phillips, this work is 'a genuine love letter to suburban malaise and the kids with worlds inside their heads much bigger than the narrow, confining one they inhabit.'
Brad Phillips was raised in Pickering, Ontario. He presently lives and works in Vancouver, BC.
