Within this exhibition Holger Kalberg presents us with a series of paintings that use photography as their starting point. The paintings are based on recent tourist photographs that revolve around events and locations that find resonance in the past. The images depict locations and spaces devoid of people yet through this absence a fleeting link of their historical significance tugs at our memory. We are confronted with a familiar image that we somehow cannot place. Is it purely invented? Are these banal locations merely an amalgamation of a number of collected locales from our past? It is the transfer of media, from photography to painting, which we begin to question their purely documentary nature. The strength of these paintings is their ability to resonate with an extra, sometimes subverted, piece of information not apparent at the normal first glance.

Holger Kalberg lives and works in Vancouver.
