Stephen Waddell's new exhibition Pictures consists of colour photographs in three different scales that depict labourers, such as chimney sweeps and coal handlers, and their surrounding environments. Waddell also a painter, presents us with a photography that contains subtle and enigmatic gestures that reference pictorial notions found within the history of painting. Synonymous with the historic photographs of Atget and August Sander, the striking portraits of labourers found within Waddell's Pictures also find comparison to what Baudelaire referred to as "Mythic figures". As Waddell states "Baudelaire attributed a metaphysical weight to those figures in the street; as if they are phantasms from another time". Through Waddell's photographs these Mythic figures most certainly bear evidence of a heroic and often forgotten past.

Stephen Waddell lives and works in Berlin and Vancouver.
