| Hymns, Scrims & Accompaniments
May 10 - June 5, 2003
Opening reception: Saturday, May 10, 2003, 2pm
This exhibition, comprised of a multitude of drawings on paper and one large scale scenic backdrop style painting, finds its roots within a variety of historical popular culture references. Images from scholastic textbooks, animated film stills and illustrations from the 1930's, 40's and 50's are but a few sources that provide a starting point for Root. Imagined characters reminiscent of private boarding schools from an obscure and hazy distant past also come to mind. It is as if we are viewing grown-ups trapped within the body of a child or children who have only lived as adults. Upon viewing these works we are taken to a dreamlike state that floats somewhere between a world of innocence and authority. A wondrous idealized state with subtle dark undertones prevails.
