Within the exhibition, Good As Gold, Allan Switzer cleverly utilizes two very distinct materials predominant within the history of art to make reference to the artist's ever going process of reflection, evaluation and the quest for perfection in their practice. By using both sculptural and painting references, Switzer explores the notion of the ideal, success and the possibility of failure within an artist's work. As with his past work, Switzer once again is blurring the boundaries of the machine-made and the personal application within his practice. Good As Gold consists of large canvases utilizing found imagery with painted text and new metal works. The metal works are of chrome and 22kt gold plated laser cut steel. The gold works, which use a copper and nickel base with gold applied in three final coats, act as a reference point in their materiality to Switzer's central notion of the pursuit for perfection and greatness. Gold as the ultimate commodity, as a treasure, as the highest reward, as the measure of perfection are just some of the references that come to mind. It speaks to us of the ongoing quest for greatness and its never ending elusiveness not only for the artist but also for us all.

Allan Switzer lives and works in Vancouver.
