| Monte Clark Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by Vancouver artist Allan Switzer.
November 7 - December 7, 2001
Opening reception: November 7th at 7 PM
Artist in attendance
In this body of work titled, That's My Soul in There, Switzer has once again succeeded in blurring the boundaries between the machine-made and painting, yet this time pushes the tension even further. The resulting work has been chrome plated giving highly polished surfaces, which the viewer can see their own reflection on. Switzer, described this latest work as the "next step forward into my explorations of he possibilities of text formatted both for their visual and sculptural qualities". The theme if the show is a self-reflective one, both in part of the artist and the viewer. This self-reflection engages the viewer as an active participant in the process of art making.
Sayings written in a creepy comic book typeset, that are made from laser cut steel which have then been double chrome plated are installed on the wall. Highly polished aluminum drops have been grouped on the walls to create the appearance of the wall dripping with tears of joy or tears of sorrow. In contrast, the meticulously executed work and slick surfaces offer a resting palace to the creeping font of the reliefs/sayings. The one painting among the relief sculptures, with its warping and illusory effect, provides a dizzying display of colour and shape, which is in keeping with the sayings in chrome.
