"Cabin" is an exhibition of both photographs and a DVD format video presented on a plasma screen. The photographs and the video depict incidences of enclosure and settlement while directing attention to the continuing modernization of the rustic. The images depict the ad hoc use of vernacular materials for the purpose of settlement of the rural landscape, and illustrate issues regarding privacy and how privacy is desired. The language of photography is explored within the various studies of the cabin's exterior. The architectural document, the nature study, abstract details and the cinematic figure all hybridize to create a pluralistic interpretation of pictorial genre and fictional narrative. Cabin with Motion Light returns to an earlier work, the nocturnal scene of a cabin illuminated by the spotlight of a motion light device. This new work recreated in 2001, reflects upon the relationship between the still image of the presented photographs and the moving image of the nearly still objects captured by video. In this exhibition both photography and video are presented side by side to be viewed simultaneously.
Scott McFarland is currently participating in "These Days" an exhibition of contemporary art that features local artists at The Vancouver Art Gallery. Artist talk will be given September 13, at 7:30PM, room 403, at the Vancouver Art Gallery.
