Exterior Studies At Night consists of nine photographs portraying yards and homes at night. This ongoing body of work which begun in 1997, reflects the fear inherent in negotiating darkened private homes. "When viewed in the shadowy evening light, these ordinary homes and objects have foreboding resonance", Bubas writes. Exterior Studies at Night, plays on the contradictions between private darkness and focused light. In these exterior shots, Bubas puts forward the contradictions between the absence of human presence and the traces of human existence left behind. Here, the voyeuristic positioning of the camera creates suspense and heightens the viewer's anticipation.

The photographs were made using painted light, a technique that involves using a handheld flashlight and long exposure to light the subjects. The mixture between the flashlight and the light from windows and motion detectors creates an eerie ambiance with no apparent specific light source.

Karin Bubas was born in Vancouver in 1976 and she studied at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. Bubas lives and works in Vancouver. In March 2002, a group exhibition of Karin Bubas' and Anna Hunt's work was shown at The Monte Clark Gallery in Toronto.
