The Power Plant Visiting Artist's Talk: Mark Lewis Wednesday, April 28, 7 pm Free
Comprised of two films and an accompanying series of photographs, the exhibition will infuse the gallery with the observational, meditative quality with which Lewis analyzes his surroundings and for which he has become internationally known. Whether through urban settings or panoramic vistas, Lewis considers each scene in terms of the viewer's relationship to the work, using the epic quality of film to stunning effect.
His inspirational association with painting becomes clear in the way photographic technology is used to transform a painterly historical language, as in The Lawson Estate, SE1, 2003 where this technique proves to be at once simple and mysteriously potent. The surveillance-like camera records seemingly inauspicious action, the movement of which corresponds to the viewer's engagement with the scene. Conversely, in Brass Rail, the camera slowly zooms in and out, while simultaneously tracking out and in against the zoom, engulfing the viewer's consciousness in revelations of perspective and meaning.
The photographs accompanying the films are location stills, made before the film is shot or even conceived and as such contribute valuable elements to each film's construction, scenes which first captured the artist's attention and from which the films developed. Together, the films and photographs seem to manipulate time's movement within themselves, while supporting the development of a fresh historicism through the window of today's constantly changing environment.
Mark Lewis lives and works in London, UK where he is an editor of the international art journal 'Afterall' (London, Los Angeles). He is principal researcher in fine art at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London. This exhibition is part of Contact 2004.
