| The Monte Clark Gallery is please to announce an exhibition of paintings by Martin Bennett.
COOL LIKE CANALETTO
7 January - 4 February, 2003
Opening Saturday, January 11th, 1pm
Artist in attendance
Bennett's work presents the position of abstraction within contemporary painting. The Monte Clark Gallery will exhibit paintings from a body of work referred to as the Static Image Paintings. These paintings establish the limits and construct the visual problems necessary for the occurrence of abstraction. They respond to the nature of abstraction and the authority it has over how a picture is viewed. His work makes connections to artists not usually associated with discussions on abstraction; artists such as Canaletto, John Constable and Rene Magritte.
Martin Bennett was born in 1970 in Winchester, England and moved to Medicine Hat, Alberta in 1975. He studied at the Alberta College of Art and Design from 1988-1992. Since 1992 he has exhibited consistently with the Trépanier Baer Gallery, Calgary as well as being included in group exhibitions at the Nickle Arts Museum, Edmonton Art Gallery and Kelowna Art Gallery. He has also exhibited in London, England and Zurich, Switzerland. In 1997 Bennett returned to Europe living briefly in Prague, Czech Republic before settling in London, England. He now divides his time between London and Toronto.
The Monte Clark Gallery would like to thank the Trépanier Baer Gallery, Calgary for their cooperation with this exhibition.
