GRAHAM GILLMORE
November 19, 2003 - January 18, 2004
Graham Gillmore is known for his witty and visually provocative works that deconstruct and twist popular phrases and familiar sentences into visual splendor. Gillmore's humorous verbal puzzles derive their influence from film, literature, cultural theory and generic pop culture. Recognized in Canada primarily for his masonite pieces, the current exhibition features works on ledger paper. This medium is receiving critical acclaim in the international market as has been confirmed by the recent acquisition of one of Gillmore's large ledger paper works by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. These paper pieces explore Gillmore's investigation into the organization of language; organic forms enclose and link disparate letters and words in a cacophony of visual splendor. Graham Gillmore's work continues to fascinate, challenge and question the viewer's perception and representation of language with a lethal combination of bewilderment, humor and intellectual curiosity.

TWELVE SECONDS AND RISING
November 19, 2003 - January 18, 2004
Anna Hunt, the British artist known for her powerful, photographic like images depicting icons of modernist architecture intricately fabricated out of thread on canvas, presents us with a new series of work based on flight. According to Hunt "while working on the architecture series I'd come across Le Corbusier's book on Aircraft and had heard Norman Foster describing the Boeing 747 as one of his favorite buildings; so the link was fairly obvious". The current exhibition consists of twelve immaculately detailed thread on canvas works that investigate the history, the wonder and the complexities of flight's relationship to the modern world. The title of the exhibition Twelve Seconds and Rising not only remunerates the number of works in the show but also makes direct reference to the recorded amount of time of the Wright brother's historical first flight. A number of the works in the exhibition are based on actual photographs from aviation's varied past and present while other works pay homage to earlier artists who have ventured into this field. Anna Hunt's thread on canvas works, in detailed colour and striking black and white rendering, once again present us with an uncommon use of material that manifests with startling results.
Anna Hunt lives and works in Brighton, England.
