The Monte Clark Gallery Toronto is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by Vancouver photographer Roy Arden. This exhibition presents recent black & white photographs by Vancouver artist Roy Arden. Life-scaled studies or details of urban phenomena and the human figure, these new works are perhaps more intimate than his previous pictures. While the views of a derelict automobile, a worker's smoking area or the detritus accumul-ated around a sewer grate raise issues of value, the inclusion of the nude studies points to the body as the origin of those issues. All of these photographic tableaux are somewhat dispassionately descriptive and could be characterized as more Realist than documentary. Well known for his large colour photographs of what he has referred to as "the landscape of the economy", Arden has exhibited nationally and internationally. Recent exhibitions include Roy Arden - Selected Works 1985 - 2000 at l'espace Vox in Montreal (Aug.29 - Oct.27, 2002) and Shopping - Art & Consumer Culture at the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt (September 28 - December 1, 2002) Shopping later travels to the Tate Liverpool.
The Monte Clark Gallery, with spaces in Toronto and Vancouver, represents leading Canadian and international contemporary artists, including Roy Arden, Graham Gillmore, Anna Hunt and Scott McFarland.
